Prof. Sunila Rai, Ph.D.

Sunila Rai, Ph.D. is a Professor of aquaculture and fisheries in the Department of Aquatic Resources and is currently serving as the Chairperson of the Service Commission at the Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Nepal. She obtained her Ph.D. in Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. With over 25 years of professional experience, Prof. Rai has held several key academic and administrative positions. Prof. Rai has led multiple nationally and internationally funded research projects, with support from organizations such as NARDF, USAID, Danida, European Union, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and Swiss Leading House South Asia. A pioneer in developing Low cost Small indigenous fish-based carp polyculture systems in Nepal, Prof. Rai has significantly contributed to improving livelihoods and nutritional outcomes among Tharu women farmers through women fish farmers’ cooperatives and self-help groups in the Chitwan and Nawalpur districts. Additionally, Prof. Rai currently serves as the Chairperson of the Nepal Fisheries Society (NEFIS). She is also a member of 3rd Executive Committee of Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Section (GAFS) of Asian Fisheries Society.
